The presentation will discuss case scenarios and potential abuse issues which may come to the attention of staff providing aged care services. The presentation will mention the compulsory reporting obligations, but focus on identifying other types of abuse, the response staff can make to protect older people, and the role of advocacy.

In order to help people better manage their medicines, pharmacists are funded by government to conduct a Home Medicines Review. During a home visit, the pharmacist will provide education to the patient on their use of medicines, after which a report to the GP is written, sometimes including suggestions or recommendations where appropriate.

Residents of aged care homes have access to a similar program, although there are some subtle differences.

As a part of the Commonwealth Government's Asthma Management program, Asthma Foundation Australia have commenced a community support program to raise awareness of asthma management throughout Australia. You are invited to attend this 45 minute interactive workshop that provides an insight into the impact of Asthma (with a particular focus on older australians), the symptoms and triggers associated with asthma, up-to-date medications, a practical component exploring current delivery devices, asthma management and the asthma action plan, how to recognise a severe asthma attack and asthma first aid. We will also provide you with an overview of our community support program and how you can contact us to arrange education sessions in your facility.

This presentation will provide an overview of services available for hard of hearing adults through vicdeaf and hearservice, highlighting how they operate in conjunction with other hearing service providers.

Staff from both the aged care and acute care sector are often in the position of receiving patients from the other's facility and heard to complain that their incoming patient is colonized or infected with an Antibiotic Resistant Organism (ARO). We need to get an understanding about the characteristics of these aros so that this knowledge can be used to better care for our patients without negative associations about each other's health care facility.  

In this 45 minute session, we will explore

•        why they spread the way they do
•         colonization and infection
•        where they like to reside and why
•        what we know reduces their chance of surviving
•        what precautions we could rethink when caring for our clients

Care Training Australia (CTA) has developed a holistic training model (a professional career development pathway). The model supports the aged care sector in the planning and delivery of staff training and professional development, meeting accreditation requirements and delivering the needs of organisations. Toileting programs are a key strategy in continence management for frail older people. Too often these programs are based on inadequate information and a tendency that one size fits all. Consequently these programs are usually less than effective resulting in the person not receiving optimal continence care.

This session will discuss the essential factors for success: individual assessment, individual toileting plan, and adequate privacy and time to complete toileting. In addition the role and responsibility of care staff will be discussed.

Providing adequate pain relief to the elderly is often a difficult problem. This session will discuss various oral analgesic preparations and their timely use in the elderly. Further information will be provided as to the benefits and limitations of the various agents currently in common use and how to assess the efficacy of the analgesia provided.
