Paul de la Motte, President of Australian Horticultural Therapy Association Inc.

This presentation gives the participant an overview of the therapeutic benefits of gardening, particularly focussed on aged care. It will examine specific garden design elements, adaptive tools, raised garden beds and garden based activities that can be used for the elderly. Much of the session will focus on the specific needs of clients suffering dementia. The presentation will include examples and photographs of gardens and garden programs from Australia and overseas.

This workshop will briefly explore key challenges in community care service delivery in a culturally diverse society including stumbling blocks & practical solutions. Best practice examples of meeting these challenges will also be presented.

1415-1500 Driving and driving cessation: issues for older people
Dr Jacki Liddle, Occupational Therapist and postdoctoral research fellow, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Queensland and Kerry Mallon Occupational Therapist - Driving Assessor.

This session will provide an overview of issues related to driving, medical fitness to drive, and retirement from driving. Information about driving assessment and the impact of driving cessation will be discussed. The session will also include research into methods of promoting continued community engagement after retirement from driving (UQdrive program).
